Two Winvic Projects Impress to Make the Highways Awards 2024 Finals

Posted on August 8, 2024 in Award Announcement

Winvic Construction Ltd has been shortlisted in two categories for the Highways Awards 2024; Active Travel Scheme of the Year and the Major Project Award.

Winvic will attend the awards ceremony at Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge on Tuesday, 24 September along with client SEGRO.

Winvic’s A16 Marsh Lane Roundabout project in Boston has been selected as a finalist for the Active Travel Scheme of the Year category due to its novel innovation and design, which benefits both the community’s safety and local environment’s health. It was the first project that Winvic delivered as part of the four-year Lincolnshire County Council highways framework contract and the first set of Lincolnshire A16 improvements.

Significant enhancements have been completed to over 3,000m2 of the A16 carriageway, including widening of the roundabout and its approaches. The scheme has created a three-quarter mile active travel route in the Wyberton Low Road area of Boston, including new shared footways and cycleways, a new toucan crossing on the A16 and Marsh Lane and an updated layout on Wyberton Low Road to allow cyclists to pass through the island arrangement.

The A16 March Lane Roundabout project was commended in the Medium Project Award category at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) East Midland Merit Awards in July.

The major improvement scheme has promoted active travel, reduced congestion on the A16, improved safety and connectivity, helped further net zero goals and future-proofed the roundabout for future A16 upgrades down the line. Winvic has recently announced its third project under the LCC highways framework contract; work has begun on major improvements as part of a planned five-month reconstruction exercise to fully-rebuild Dysart Road in Grantham, Lincolnshire, including the junctions of adjoining side roads.

A finalist in the Major Project Award category is Winvic’s Roade Bypass scheme, a part of the SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton (SLPN) civils and infrastructure project. The category was open to any large-scale project that has proven innovation, quantifiable impact and environmental consideration.

A Net Zero in Construction scheme, the Roade Bypass project comprises a 2.5km single carriageway, three 60-metre diameter roundabouts which tie into the A508 and Blisworth Road, a steel arch underpass which facilitates an existing bridleway and a new road bridge across the West Coast Main Line. The 48-metre single span bridge is located in a Victorian rail cutting and boarded by a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), so preservation impacted the design and construction. More details and a drone video of the completed scheme can be found on Page 13 of the latest digital Winvic Word newsletter.

Winvic delivered significant benefits to local communities as part of the project across five areas: ‘local employment, training and upskilling’, ‘work experience, placement, and apprenticeship opportunities’ ‘curriculum enhancement engagement’, ‘supply chain opportunities’ and ‘community engagement’. The bypass and reconfiguration works at Junction 15 of the M1 will support additional traffic created by the SLPN Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) and logistics hub; Winvic was awarded the contract to construct the first industrial facility at SLPN for end user Yusen Logistics in May.

Rob Cook, Managing Director of Civils and Infrastructure at Winvic, said: “While these two highways projects are very different, they each shared the goals of reducing congestion, improving safety, supporting Net Zero aims and delivering benefits to local communities. I’m extremely proud of what our teams have achieved for SEGRO in Northampton and Lincolnshire County Council in Boston and we’re delighted to now be publicly recognised by the Highways Awards for our outstanding delivery.

“The announcement of Winvic’s finalist status has certainly boosted our confidence as we begin our third project under the Lincolnshire County Council highways framework and progress the first industrial warehouse at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton and we look forward to attending the awards ceremony  in September.”
