On the 18th September students from Kempston Challenger Academy Bedford were invited to take a tour of Bedford Link Logistics Park where Winvic are currently building three industrial units, ranging from 32,000 sq ft to 106,000 sq ft, for joint venture partners LondonMetric and Graftongate.
Winvic, UMC Architects and BWB Consulting took pleasure in welcoming the students, explaining the different activities taking place on site and answering any questions the students threw at them. The students were even asked to complete the small tasks of setting out some points and taking dimensions and coordinates of items on site.
The visit marked the start of a partnership between the project team and the academy which aims to enrich the school curriculum by showing students ‘real’ links between the subjects they study in school and their application in the workplace.
Sam Vickers, Winvic’s Project Manager on the scheme stated “It was nice to conduct a school visit with the help of the project’s architects and engineers giving the students an insight into the different jobs and activities that are involved in the construction process. It is a small step in raising awareness and encouraging young people into construction, the students appeared to enjoy the day as much as we all did”.
Kempston Challenger Academy commented they too were “extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to visit and see this new logistics park in its early stages.
We are looking forward to further visits to the WINVIC site and seeing how the project progresses.
Thank you to Sam Vickers and his team for giving the time to explain the reason for this park’s location, the long planning process of the site and the amount of site preparation before a structure is started.
This wasn’t just a Careers Visit it was very much a cross curricular local opportunity.”
