Winvic was appointed by National Highways to undertake widening and roundabout construction works on the A5 highway, as part of a S278 agreement to facilitate access to the new 18-acre Hinckley Park industrial and manufacturing site close to Junction 1 of the M69.

The programme of works included the construction of a new 50m diameter roundabout, widening and resurfacing works of approx 1.5km of single carriageway for National Highways. The widening of the A5 provided space for the creation a new 600m pedestrian footway on the north side of the road for Leicestershire Council. Additionally, an access off the A5 – 650m east of M69 J1 – was constructed, for the sole use of a new sub-station.
Winvic undertook earthworks to engineer existing ground levels to correlate with the new works and drainage works for the existing highway were amended to suit the new road configuration. Up-to-date signage and white lining were installed prior to the scheme’s handover to National Highways. The majority of the work to construct the roundabout took place offline to reduce the impact on the road network, with short periods of overnight traffic signals and closures being effected to deliver the carriageway widening and final surfacing works.
We worked closely with local business DPD, which has its largest parcel hub in Europe located at Hinckley Park, to mitigate the works’ impact, ensuring delivery vehicles had access throughout each of the night-time closures during the facility’s operational testing phase in the lead up to Christmas.
