Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of private and public sector construction and civil engineering projects, has been announced as a finalist in two categories in the first ESG Edge Awards. Plot 5 at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway (SLPEMG) has made the shortlist for ESG New-Build Project of the Year (Large) and Winvic’s Green Supply Chain (GSC) is up for the Education & Awareness Initiative award.
Winvic, SEGRO and members of the Green Supply Chain will attend the award ceremony, which will be held at the Hilton Bankside on 12 November.
The Education & Awareness Initiative – Winvic’s Green Supply Chain
This category seeks to celebrate initiatives that effectively and creatively promote the understanding of ESG principles and their significance within the property market, emphasising their impact on communities, the environment, and the industry. The work achieved by Winvic and its GSC does exactly that.
As a main contractor, Winvic understands the significance and complexity of its Scope 3 emissions and aims to raise the bar by proactively engaging with its supply chain to activate focus on ESG principles and carbon reduction. 80 subcontractors from the most carbon intensive packages are currently members of Winvic’s GSC forum; this will exceed 100 by the end of 2024.
Winvic focuses on educating, influencing, upskilling and supporting all supply chain partners on sustainability, Net Zero and Social Value subject areas to ensure the lowest embodied carbon emissions throughout the lifecycle of a project and to deliver positive impacts for local communities; the ambitious initiative helps to meet both client’s and Winvic’s ESG goals and decarbonise the development.
All GSC members have embedded sustainable practices and reduced their annual operational carbon emissions by a minimum of 5%; many have created new sustainability focused roles and sustainable initiatives. Winvic’s visionary initiative is therefore benefitting other main contractors, the industry as a whole and most importantly, the planet.
ESG New-Build Project of the Year (Large) – Plot 5, SLPEMG
Recognising large-scale, new property developments that set high standards in sustainability, social value, stakeholder engagement and other aspects of good governance, this category evaluates entrants based on their ability to set clear objectives, demonstrate insightful approaches and execute innovative solutions.
Commitment, innovative thinking and collaboration with Green Supply Chain partners, education providers and the community have resulted in the 600,217 sq ft industrial facility being an exemplar ESG-focused and Net Zero in Construction project. The Life Cycle Assessment at practical completion revealed a 39% carbon improvement (from RIBA Stage 4) due to numerous strategic carbon reducing materials and construction processes.
The next generation was engaged through mentorships, on-site placements and visits, and local people benefitted; 27% of the site team were from within 30-mile radius, over £20 million was spent within the same local area and materials, resources and funds were donated to multiple not-for-profit organisations.
Arun Thaneja, Winvic’s Technical Services and Sustainability Director, commented: “The Winvic team is very proud to have taken some bold steps in creating a Green Supply Chain and our journey of unwavering commitment has not been easy. Nevertheless, our success and achievements across numerous projects – including Plot 5 at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway – are thanks to all the suppliers and their dedicated people who share in our vision. If we win either of these ESG Edge awards, there really are hundreds of people who need to be commended for their passion and efforts.
“With 16 Net Zero Carbon projects completed and a further 15 underway – totalling 66 individual industrial buildings – Winvic is delighted to be recognised as an ESG leader, but we are continually learning and striving to achieve greater things for our clients and the industry as a whole. What was clear from the UKREiiF panel session we recently hosted about Whole Life Cycle Assessments is that taking inspiration from others and collaborative ideas will help the construction and property sectors reach its environmental, sustainability and social value goals more quickly.”
