Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of private and public sector construction and civil engineering projects has been selected as a finalist in this year’s Digital Construction Awards. Their entry about the use of an AI-enabled combined noise and dust monitor – a UK-first in the industry – has been shortlisted along with nine other companies in the Best Application of Technology category.
The Digital Construction Awards celebrate the most pioneering projects, teams, and individuals championing innovation and technology in the built environment, whether at the bleeding edge of technology and digitalisation or exploring digital technologies and processes for the first time.
Winvic will attend the award ceremony, which will take place on Tuesday, 2 July at the Brewery in Central London.
About the AI-enabled innovative technology
Winvic’s use of this AI-enabled combined noise and dust monitor is a construction industry first and the benefits are plentiful.
AI Combined Dust and Noise Monitor Technology at Bletchley View
The real-time noise monitoring technology, which differentiates between external environmental and construction noise sources, has resulted in a reduction in environmental noise related complaints from site neighbours in comparison to sites utilising conventional noise monitoring equipment. In turn this is helping to improve the public’s perception of the construction industry.
Winvic and its subcontractors have utilised the real-time data to better understand if noise mitigation measures are effective or could be improved and learnings have been applied to other sites. Reducing the potential noise impact on local people benefits their health and wellbeing and 16 monitors are currently placed across seven Winvic sites.
Paul Thomas, Head of Environment at Winvic, commented: “After receiving a Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice for our use of the AI-enabled dust and noise monitor, we’re delighted to be announced as a finalist in the Digital Construction Awards for the same technology. We’re very proud to be the first UK contractor to make use of the innovative technology, which we’ve found to be an incredibly effective measure in minimising the potential impact of noise upon local communities.
“It was previously difficult and time consuming to identify sources of potential environmental noise nuisance impacts through conventional analyses. This real time environmental noise monitoring system has reduced onerous data analysis and reduced complaints in comparison to our sites that are manually analysing environmental noise levels. Eight monitors were initially placed across four sites and the success we saw has led to 16 monitors being placed across seven Winvic sites. We have tough competition in the Best Application of Technology category, but we look forward to attending the ceremony in July.”
