Winvic welcomed eleven second year Civil Engineering students from the University of Southampton on site at Wide Lane Southampton. The students were given the opportunity to learn about Winvic as a company, details relating to construction Health and Safety and were walked around the site, where construction of four individual warehouse distribution units with office blocks are being constructed, totalling 318,612 sq ft and valued at £18.7m.
The site visit was as a result of the proactive effort of Winvic’s Human Resources and Training Co-ordinator Rebecca Schwarz, contacting the University of Southampton to look at ways the Wide Lane project could support employability within the construction sector. The organised visit gave the students the opportunity to obtain valuable information to help with an assignment that required the students to visit a construction site and report back on H&S and construction management procedures.
Our Site Manager, Project Manager and Health and Safety Manager enjoyed the chance to engage with the students taking their first steps towards a career in construction and relished in answering questions regarding the need for the project, the EIA, works, contract, project management, people (workforce) and day-to-day operations, which the enthusiastic students didn’t hold back in firing at them.
The visit was such as success that Winvic invited the students to apply for summer work experience placements and further visits from student of University of Southampton will be well received.
