Kuehne & Nagel to Occupy 196,000 sq ft Facility
Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor specialising in turnkey solutions for industrial, build-to-rent, student accommodation and commercial projects, has completed a 196,000 sq ft modern industrial building at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway (Plot 4, SLPEMG). It is the first of four facilities to reach practical completion at the flagship park, with Kuehne & Nagel operating in the building from April 2019, also recently completed and operational from today is the park’s management suite and transport hub.
The £17 million, BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rated facility was constructed and fitted-out by Winvic in 33 weeks. It comprises a 163,000 sq ft single storey warehouse/production unit with a 40,000 sq ft temperature controlled area for pharmaceutical products, 33,000 sq ft office and amenity areas and 410,000 sq ft yard space.
- Structural steel multi span portal frame – H15/16m W70m x L217m
- 64 dock levellers
- 7 level access doors
- Parking for 270 cars and 175 lorries
- Electric vehicle charging points
Winvic found solutions to complex design and engineering challenges. Huge valley bases were required due to the location of the building creating high wind loadings, a steel cantilever bridge links the hub office and main offices and an external cantilevered canopy facilitates vehicles to be side loaded with forklift trucks.
The management suite is a single storey building comprising 1,180 sq ft of offices, a kitchen, a meeting room and a security office. The transport hub is located at the park’s entrance for employees arriving and departing by bus. Winvic constructed the purpose-built hub and equipped it with real-time bus information screens and amenities, making it a safe and comfortable waiting area.
Rob Bull, Winvic’s Construction Director, commented: “We completed the first industrial warehouse at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway in less than nine months, and our effective partnership working with SEGRO and Kuehne & Nagel should be celebrated. Winvic’s staff, subcontractors and consultants have worked as one team to deliver this ‘turnkey’ unit quickly, safely and on budget. We look forward to seeing the first employees, on site and using the new public transport routes, while we continue working on the 700 acre site.”
Andrew Pilsworth, Business Unit Director for National Logistics at SEGRO, said: “The completion of the first unit at SLPEMG is a significant milestone and marks the park being officially open for business. In less than 9 months we’ve delivered a great facility to one of our group-wide customers and we’re delighted to have them on site. Progress continues apace across the park and we’re also delighted to welcome our new park manager.”

Furthermore, the civils and infrastructure phase – on the shortlist for Best Health, Safety and Wellbeing Project at the CN Awards – was completed by Winvic in October 2018 and the multidisciplinary main contractor will conclude the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange and associated railway works in September 2019.
