We’ve now said goodbye to the Year In Industry students who have been with us on placement for between nine and twelve months. But not to be forgotten they are now taking over the Winvic blog with videos! The vlog below is the first of six interviews that we undertook with each of the trainees – remember to come back and hear from all of the 2022/23 cohort, speaking about the projects they have worked on, their different roles and tasks and they’ve learned.
First up is James, an operations placement student who is studying for a BSc in Construction Project Management degree at Sheffield Hallam University. James is working on the Roade bypass element at our Civils and Infrastructure project, SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton, which comprises a 2.5km highway, three roundabouts and a bridge over the railway line. We spoke to James back in June so the bypass programme has moved on.
James told us that the role is different every day and he’s been doing tasks such as setting out the positions for manholes, marking out where gullies go, pinning out fencing lines and undertaking quality assurance inspections on completed work. But also, he has learned about the whole project process through the mini placements we arrange for our Year In Industry students across numerous Winvic departments.
He explains that he found it challenging to land on such a huge site in a job with a lot of new terminology to learn but he says the people helped him to settle in, made him feel welcome and being a hands-on Trainee Site Engineer is the new norm. “Everyone is there to help you and willing to assist and answer questions.”
