Winvic Site Engineer Ammara Selected as Rising Star Finalist in Highways UK Excellence Awards

Posted on October 1, 2024 in Award Announcement

Winvic Construction Ltd has added to its already impressive list of potential 2024 awards with site engineer, Ammara Dassu, being selected as a finalist in the Highways UK Excellence Awards. Ammara is up for the Associate Laureates (Rising Star) Award, which showcases early career individuals who have already demonstrated the attributes that set them apart as future industry leaders.

The Awards Ceremony will take place on the evening of Wednesday, 16 October as part of the two-day Highways UK exhibition and conference at the NEC in Birmingham.

Ammara first joined Winvic as a Year in Industry student in July 2020 as a Trainee Site Engineer and excelled before returning to university to complete her BSc in Civil Engineering. A blog she wrote explaining her experience as a trainee can be found here. After graduation, Ammara returned to Winvic as a full-time employee and has flourished in her Site Engineer role over the last two years, working at the SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton (SLPN) project.

Day-to-day Ammara is responsible for setting out and surveying components on site; including services, drainage, kerbs, roads, tarmac levels, white lines, earthworks, rail track and mechanically stabilised earth walls. She has also worked on the rail elements at SLPN, main industrial plots, the 2.5km bypass through Roade Village, and the M1 J15A upgrade, proving to be a passionate, forward-thinking and committed member of the team at every step.

Committed to ongoing learning for herself and others, Ammara is also working towards her Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Incorporated Engineer Chartership, and she has taken on the responsibility of managing and mentoring an apprentice and a Year in Industry student. Additionally, Winvic selected Ammara to engage with college and secondary school students, to share her knowledge of engineering, detail her career path and inspire the next generation of construction professionals as part of the main contractor’s social value programme.

Winvic’s Contracts Director, Scott Martin – who has recently featured on the Winvic blog talking about SLPN, his career and his recent promotion – said: “I worked with Ammara at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton (SLPN) in my role as Project Director and I agree that she is a rising star in the industry. Even during her Year In Industry placement, Ammara stood out to the team as a solution driven and passionate site engineer.

“Ammara has always been meticulous in her work and at the SLPN project, her foresight and eye for detail enabled her to proactively identify significant cost savings and reduce the project’s embedded carbon. The whole team wishes her the best of luck for the awards ceremony.”
