edie Awards 2025 Celebrate Winvic’s Sustainability Leadership with Finalist Announcement

Posted on January 14, 2025 in Sustainability

Winvic Construction Ltd’s Green Supply Chain initiative has been announced as a finalist for Supply Chain Sustainability Project of the Year in this year’s edie Awards. Now in their eighteenth year, the industry-leading edie Awards which recognise the best in corporate sustainability and champion bold climate leadership will announce the winners on 13 March at a ceremony at the Intercontinental at London’s O2.

The leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of private and public sector construction and civil engineering projects launched its Green Supply Chain (GSC) in 2021 as a proactive step to reduce Scope 3 emissions. Through bi-annual workshops and monthly communications, Winvic collaboratively engages with its GSC partners on ESG principles, decarbonisation and is committed to supporting a Just Transition to a Net Zero future.

Together, Winvic and its GSC aims to reduce carbon from cradle to practical completion – EN 15978 Stages A1-A5 – and address carbon hotspots identified through Whole Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and reporting operational carbon footprints by measuring Scopes 1-3.

Currently, 44 per cent of Winvic’s top carbon-contributing supply chain is engaged with the GSC forum and the main contractor aims for the entire supply chain to be included by 2026. Due to Winvic’s ambitious efforts, all GSC members have adopted sustainable practices and achieved a 10 per cent annual reduction in operational carbon emissions. Many have introduced sustainability focused groups and new roles, which is benefitting the whole construction industry and the planet.

The data from a total of 22 Winvic projects since 2022 reveals that the contractor’s collaborative approach to sustainability has saved 163,010 tonnes of carbon. Reduced steel deliveries have saved 141 loads and 46tCO2e per project, the increased use of cement replacements has saved 319 tCO2e per project and a 24 per cent reduction in Scope 3 emissions has been achieved by transitioning a third of vehicles to electric.

Neave Thompson, Winvic’s Senior Sustainability Manager, who recently wrote a blog about the company’s refreshed Sustainability and ESG Strategy and her role in driving the Green Supply Chain, commented: “We have come a long way since we conceived the GSC initiative, which was at a time when nobody in the construction industry was considering such an ambitious step as measuring Scope 3 emissions. It really is an honour for Winvic’s approach to a sustainable supply chain to now be shortlisted in the prestigious edie               Awards, especially also after being a finalist in the edie Net Zero Awards.

“We continue to educate, assist and upskill cohorts of subcontractors on decarbonisation and ESG and help them to understand, collect and analyse their operational and upfront carbon data. As a collaborative and committed group that meets regularly, we are continually reducing our environmental impact through both on-site and operational carbon reduction activities and we’re proud to have driven an abundance of positive, impactful process changes.”
