BLOG: Technical Services and Sustainability Director, Arun Thaneja, on Winvic’s Carbon Neutral milestone

Posted on December 22, 2025 in Blog

From embedding sustainability across every site to collaborating on national standards, Winvic Construction’s commitment to decarbonisation has reached an important milestone – the business has achieved Net Carbonzero certification through the Achilles Climate Impact Programme, verified under ISO 14064 Part 3, officially making Winvic a Carbon Neutral business.

In this blog, we talk to Arun Thaneja, Technical Services and Sustainability Director, about the journey of the company to this point, what it means for the business and how Winvic is helping to shape the future of sustainable construction through initiatives including the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS) Pilot Testing Programme.

What does achieving Carbon Neutral status mean for Winvic?

It’s a huge achievement for everyone across the business and the Carbon Neutral certification means we’ve reduced our overall carbon footprint by 71 percent, in compliance with the ISO 14064 Part 1 requirements.

The milestone demonstrates real progress on our decarbonisation journey and reinforces our commitment to accountability, transparency and continuous improvement. It’s proof that sustainability isn’t an add-on at Winvic – it’s embedded into our operations and core values.

When did Winvic’s sustainability journey begin?

We began measuring our greenhouse gas emissions back in 2012, long before sustainability was as mainstream as it is today and we understood early on that you can’t manage what you don’t measure.

Over the years, we’ve refined that approach through annual carbon reporting, achieving the Achilles Carbon Reduce Programme Certification in line with ISO 14064-1 since 2022. This gives our clients and partners confidence that we’re working to globally recognised standards.

Why was it important for Winvic to have its Carbon Neutral status verified by an independent body?

Transparency and trust are absolutely critical for us as a company and in the industry, and the Achilles Climate Impact Programme, verified under ISO 14064 Part 1, ensures our data and reduction measures are audited against a globally recognised certification, aligned with Science Based Target initiatives (SBTis) and industry best practice for carbon emission measuring and reporting.

We’ve always believed in going beyond compliance and having independent verification gives our clients confidence that when we’ve reduced emissions and we have extensive evidence to support this, which is the same approach we take across all of our sustainability and quality management systems.

What did the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard Pilot testing programme involve?

We took part in the alongside more than 130 organisations and 216 projects across 13 sectors.

We were able to explore how our projects can be monitored against the Standard’s requirements and share insight that will benefit the whole industry. Taking part for us demonstrates an important step in creating a unified approach to defining Net Zero carbon buildings across the UK. It’s worth mentioning that no building or project can claim to be UK Net Zero Carbon aligned without third party verification of data, in line with Version 1 of the Standard’s methodology, which is expected to be published in early 2026, along with further details of the verification process and annexes for on track assessments.

Is Winvic participating in anything else as part of the company’s wider sustainability goals?

Through our ongoing partnership with the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), we are actively involved in several workstreams – from contributing to the Advancing Net Zero campaign and Supply Chain Forum, to serving as a Project Partner on several task groups including the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Framework Definition and Supply Chain Decarbonisation.

In 2024, Winvic was also invited to join the Policy Liaison Group (PLG) on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) as the sole main contractor representing the construction industry at Westminster. This opportunity gives us a direct voice in shaping future ESG policy, which is both a privilege and a responsibility.

What’s next on Winvic’s carbon reduction roadmap?

Achieving carbon neutrality is a platform for further action and we’re continuing to move forward and make progress. Our next focus is driving deeper Scope 3 emission reductions and continuing to expand our Green Supply Chain Forum.

Our ambition is to make low-carbon, high-value delivery the standard across everything we do, it’s not just one department or a single initiative at Winvic.

What advice would you give to others starting their Net Zero journey?

Start to measure your impact and collaborate with the right bodies and organisations as soon as possible – the most impactful progress happens when you are honest about where you are along your journey. If you’re setting clear goals, engaging people and partners, and being transparent, the results will come.

This certification is both a proud moment and a reminder that sustainability is a journey and we’re excited to keep moving forward together with our clients, partners and communities towards a Net Zero future.
